Productions

Following the Old Joint Stock proof-of-concept, the production transferred to London’s The Other Palace Studio, May 7–June 1, 2025 (official opening May 9). Directed by Emily Susanne Lloyd with Dora Gee as Samantha Brown, Jacob Fowler as Adam, Courtney Stapleton as Kelly, and Thea-Jo Wolfe as Beverly; music direction by Callum Thompson, choreography by Lauren Stroud (Playbill, WhatsOnStage).

The Mad Ones premiered off-Broadway in November 2017 at 59E59 Theaters, presented by Prospect Theater Company. Prospect had previously presented an early concert version of the show (then The Unauthorized Autobiography of Samantha Brown) at the New York Musical Theatre Festival in 2010, featuring Emma Hunton, Krystina Alabado, Leah Hocking, and Jay Armstrong Johnson.

Featuring Melissa Benoist as Sam and Meghann Fahy as Kelly. The show was titled The Unauthorized Autobiography of Samantha Brown during this earlier development phase.

A German-language production at Hamburg’s Ernst Deutsch Theater on its plattform-Bühne, May 9–10, 2026. Concept and direction by Elisabeth Köstner with musical direction by Lukas Voss; cast features Laura Saleh (Sam), Lisa Maria Hörl (Kelly), Judith Bloch (Beverly), and Julian Stöcklein / Peter Lehmann (Adam) (Ernst Deutsch Theater).

The Australian premiere, April 30–May 16, 2026 at Qtopia Sydney’s Loading Dock Theatre, part of the venue’s 2026 season. Directed by Sarah Campbell (co-founder of The Little Big Theatre Co) with a six-person cast: Megan Robinson, Teo Vergara, Tisha R. Kelemen, Ethan Malacaria, Gabi Lanham, and Holly Horsfall (BroadwayWorld Sydney).

Boston Conservatory mounted the show March 6–9, 2024 in the Zack Box Theater, directed by Marianna Bassham with music direction by Katya Stanislavskaya. Cast: Bridget Delaney (Sam), Abbie Smith (Kelly), Sophie Varones (Bev), Justin Diaz (Adam) (Boston Conservatory).

The UK’s first staged production ran 10–20 April 2024 at Birmingham’s Old Joint Stock Theatre, helmed by director Adam Lacey, producer James Edge, and musical director Callum Thompson, with Dora Gee (Samantha), Safia Bartley (Kelly), Thea-Jo Wolfe (Beverly), and Ryan Bartholomew (Adam). The proof-of-concept run paved the way for the 2025 Other Palace transfer (BroadwayWorld, Musical Theatre Review).

The first Cantonese-language production, presented by Musical Trio at the Sheung Wan Civic Centre Theatre, November 1–3, 2024 (five performances). Artistic direction by Seth Chan, directed by Fiona Yim, with Cantonese lyrics by Yoki Fong and translation by Bill Yiu and Fiona Yim. Cast: Mischa Ip, Chloe Wong, Richelia Yeung, and Melo Man, with live music by Kenji Tam, Alfee Huen, Ricky Hui, and Eva Ng. Supported by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (POPTICKET).

Blank Theatre Company’s Chicago premiere ran July 12–August 11, 2024 at the Athenaeum’s intimate stage, directed by Wyatt Kent with Rachel Guth (Sam), Karylin Veres (Kelly), Aidan Leake (Adam), and Anne Sheridan-Smith (Beverly). The Chicago Tribune’s Chris Jones praised Guth’s “emotional commitment” (Blank Theatre, Chicago Theatre Review).

The first known German-language production of The Mad Ones, mounted by MusicalMinds Regensburg with two alternating casts across October 28–31 and November 2–5, 2023 (MusicalMinds).

Massachusetts production directed by Lydia Cochran, with Amanda LoCoco (Sam), Julia Anthon (Kelly), Christina Pierro-Biggins (Beverly), and David Livingston (Adam) (Studio Theatre Worcester).

The St. Louis premiere ran November 3–12, 2023 at The Marcelle in Grand Center, in Kevin Corpuz’s directorial debut, with Melissa Felps as Samantha and Grace Langford as Kelly (Pop Life STL, BroadwayWorld).

A second Goodspeed-affiliated developmental run, August 4–28, 2011, at the Norma Terris Theatre in Chester, Connecticut, under the title The Unauthorized Autobiography of Samantha Brown. Meghann Fahy played the title role opposite Andrew Durand and Stephen Bogardus (Playbill).

A semi-staged conservatory presentation as part of Longy’s Opera Experience LIVE! series, performed April 30 and May 1, 2025 at Pickman Hall (Longy).

Free student production running May 30–June 8, 2025 in the Fess Parker Studio Theatre, directed by JanLee Marshall as part of SCU’s 2024–2025 mainstage season (Santa Clara University).

Maryland community-theatre run of seven performances March 6–15, 2025 at the Three Notch Theater, including a sensory-friendly performance March 12 (Southern Maryland News, Newtowne Players).

ACC’s two-cast student production ran June 8–25, 2023 at the Highland Campus Black Box, directed by Marcus McQuirter (CTX Live Theatre).

Fall 2023 university production presented by Manhattanville’s Musical Theater Department in Pius X Hall on September 30, 2023 (Manhattanville).

Boston College’s first student-directed musical through the BC Theatre Department, mounted in early 2022. Praised by The Heights for capturing “the uncertainty of youth” (The Heights).

Community theatre production in January 2022 directed by Doug Greer, with Catherine Rieflin as Sam, Brigitte Losey as Kelly, Jepoy Ramos as Adam, and Cara Burgoyne as Beverly (Pacifica Spindrift Players).

The UK professional premiere streamed online from Derby Theatre via Stream.Theatre, opening 29 May 2021 and available through 5 June 2021. Molly Hewitt-Richards directed and starred as Sam, with Alice Imelda (Beverly), Emily Knight (Kelly), and Aiden Carson (Adam); musical direction by Ben Ward (Musical Theatre Review).

A 90-minute campus production on November 19–20, 2021 with junior theatre arts major Elise Sparks as Sam, presented as part of UW-Parkside’s FreshINK Series of contemporary works (UW-Parkside).
